The sheer amount of self-help books is baffling sometimes - you have to wonder how Dr Phil turns a profit with the insane amount of competition he’s facing these days. Everybody has advice for everyone, whether anybody asked for advice or not. Single parent dating may not have an easily recognizable dating handbook that everybody’s heard of, a la He’s Just Not That Into You, Dating Survival Handbook, etc. It’s also not like single dating is this crazy niche that nobody’s heard of - the Gilmore Girls and Kramer vs Kramer are a couple of examples. Finding a decent single parent dating tip is like finding a needing a needle in the haystack unfortunately, and you have to wade through a lot of tripe before you hit gold.

Last year a show that would otherwise have been a blip on the cultural radar made a few headlines. The drama Big Love (starring Bill Paxton, with appearances by character heavyweights Bruce Dern and Harry Dean Stanton) was a show about Mormons, with a big emphasis on one of the more sensational aspect of certain renegade Mormons’ lives, namely polygamy (the Mormon Church officially banned the practice way back in 1890). The show caused a surprising uproar, and certain critics were not pleased with what they thought was a glowing recommendation of wife-swapping and open marriages. This leaves one wondering - is polygamy/open marriages still a forbidden topic? Does having an open marriage mean that you’re not capable of 
Married life isn’t easy, especially when you’re not the one who’s married. Astute readers might think that I’m not making sense, and that I’m babbling incoherently again. But it’s true - when one is attracted to a woman who’s spoken for, marriage is one heck of an impediment. The attraction of someone you think of as a hot wife might be based on the marriage itself - the temptations of forbidden fruit, etc etc. But it’s a much greater kick in the emotional teeth when you’re in love with someone for genuine reasons, only to have those emotions dismissed for whatever reason. You might be thinking that 
Gender roles, gender roles. We can pretend that immense changes have occurred for the past thirty years, but it’s pretty hard to escape a few thousand years of social conditioning. Power dynamics are a big deal, and I don’t care how liberal or egalitarian you think you are - there’s always going to be SOMEBODY taking the lead and acting as the dominant part of a relationship. Female led relationships aren’t anything new; Cleopatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Madonna, Queen Victoria, Cher are but a few very famous examples of women who’ve typically taken the lead (although now that I look at that list I notice that only Queen Victoria avoided divorce). It’s still pretty hard for guys to get over that nagging egotistical feeling when faced with a woman who takes control, and it’s important to remember that sometimes being passive ain’t such a bad thing.
I have a sinking feeling about this entry, which is probably not what people want to read when they start skimming the latest blog. So I’m just going to go out on a limb and say that this is a great time to go out on a hot Jewish date - the Jewish community was one of the first to really capitalize on the online niche dating scene, and the Jewish dating world has never been the same again. In the film About A Boy, perpetually bored Hugh Grant gets the thought into his head that dating single, emotionally vulnerable mothers is the next big thing in dating. He then proceeds to go on a series of no-strings dates with recently single mothers who are far too emotionally volatile to ever grow emotionally attached to sleazeball Grant, which is just fine by him. Needless to say this “plan” of his blows up in his face, in a variety of different way (it turns out that lying about having a child has some serious consequences). The film DOES open up a couple of questions - Are single parents in demand amongst singles that have no children of their own? Do you have to have a child to date a single parent? And just who does Hugh Grant think he is? 
Nowadays, many would say divorce is as much a part of marriage, as is compromise and love. That sounds as if I’m being a tad facetious, which of course I am. However, if you haven’t caught on, even when I’m critical of others, I’m really just being critical of myself. I am by far the last one to judge anyone’s failed relationship.
Let’s face it - I’m not going to live forever, and the chances of me freezing the ageing process is mighty slim. In fact, as I grow older, and as more and more of my friends settle down to married life/kids/cautious mutual funds, the more I realize that there’s a reasonable chance that I might be single when I hit the golden years. Even the approach of middle age is weighing on my mind. No one wants to be the old guy at the night club, and that goes for both middle aged men as well as the 65+ set (although I think it would still be amusing to hit the night club once when breaches age 75).
